Now something new is developig. He does not recognize me in the evening or when it is darker in the house from far sometimes, not all the time. he stands in attack position and barks visciously as if I am an intruder, what is this now?

It's because he can't see you clearly. Really.
Dogs hunt more by smell than sight, sight is used for things in motion rather than accuracy.
They are actually pretty myopic, and can only discern things at a distance if they move. Ever notice how you'll point out a squirrel that may be standing still to your dog, but he doesn't seem to notice it until it moves?
So, what you do is call out to him! Say his name, "Hey, pup, it's me!!".

That is what I have been doing. But how come he recognizes objects and not me? he is small but I tell you, I was scared the few times LOL. What I notice too is he does not have the best of trackign smells. I wonder if this is a trainable thing or he just lacks that?

It's probably not so much that he recognizes objects, but that those objects always stay in the same place and don't MOVE so he's used to them.
Not all dogs have noses like bloodhounds, but the do all have very heightened senses of smell. You can help develop those by playing scenting games. There's some here for you to check out:
